Perth in Winter 2026: Local Tips for Cosy Perth Weekends

It’s no secret that I’m a summer girl, give me scorching heat and sunshine over grey skies any day. But even I have to admit, Perth in winter has its perks. It’s less crowded, the mornings are crispy, and it’s finally time to dust off the stylish coats and big boots I don’t get to wear during the rest of the year.

Whether you’re here for cosy food, foggy hikes or just a quieter side of the city, I’ll share everything you need to know, from weather and what to wear, to where to stay and all the best things to do in Perth in winter.

Weather in Perth in Winter

Don’t let the word winter put you off. Perth’s winter is surprisingly mild compared to much of the world, and while we do experience a bit more rain and cloud, it’s still a great time to get out and explore while avoiding the scorching heat of summer. Here’s what you can expect from the weather during June, July and August.

Average Temperature in Perth in Winter

Across June, July and August, daytime temperatures usually sit between 18°C to 21°C (64°F to 70°F), while overnight lows can dip to around 8°C to 10°C (46°F to 50°F). It’s definitely chilly in the mornings and evenings, but during the day it’s often pleasant enough for a walk along the coast or a long lunch outdoors, especially if the sun’s out, and that means a lot coming from me – I’m a sook in the cold!

July is usually the coldest month, but even then, it rarely drops below 5°C. If you’re coming from Europe or North America, this’ll feel more like autumn than true winter.

Average Rainfall in Perth During Winter

Winter is our wet season, so you can expect more showers, but they’re often short-lived. On average, Perth gets around 120 to 140mm (4.7 to 5.5 inches) of rain per month in winter, with July typically being the wettest. This is spread over an average of 11-15 rainy days each month of winter. 

Bring a rain jacket or a compact umbrella, but don’t panic about the forecast. You’ll still get plenty of dry spells to head out and explore between the showers.

What Time is Sunrise and Sunset in Perth in Winter?

Winter days are shorter, but there’s still a decent amount of daylight to play with. Sunrise is usually around 7:00 am, give or take 15 minutes across the season and sunset hovers between 5:20 pm and 5:45pm.

UV Levels in Perth in Winter

Even in winter, Perth’s UV levels don’t completely drop off. On most days, the UV index sits between 2 and 4, which is considered moderate. If you’re spending a lot of time outdoors, especially in the middle of the day, it’s still worth slapping on some sunscreen, chucking on a hat and wearing sunnies. The Aussie sun doesn’t muck around, even in winter.

Is Perth Cloudy in Winter?

Yes, winter brings noticeable cloud cover. You can expect around 14 to 17 cloudy days per month during June, July and August, especially around weather fronts. That said, it’s not three months of gloom, there’s still a good mix of sunny or partly-sunny days in between.

How Humid is Perth in Winter?

Perth’s winter humidity is fairly mild and usually sits somewhere between 60% and 80%, depending on the weather pattern. Mornings can feel a little damp, especially after overnight rain, but it’s not the kind of thick, sticky humidity you get in the tropics.

Does it snow in Perth in Winter?

Nope! Snow’s not on the cards here. Perth has a Mediterranean climate, which means mild, wet winters but nothing cold enough for snow. Even on our chilliest mornings temperatures stay well above freezing. If you’re chasing snow in WA, your best (and only) bet is the Stirling Ranges near Albany and even then it’s rare and only dusts the peaks after a particularly cold snap.

1. Visit the Art Gallery and Museum

When it’s cold or raining, head straight to the Perth Cultural Centre in Northbridge. The Art Gallery of WA and WA Museum Boola Bardip are both warm, dry and make for an interesting  day out. You’ll find Indigenous art, WA history, dinosaurs, gold nuggets and more. I also recommend grabbing a drink nearby at PICA Bar – it’s one of my favourites!

2. Spend a Day in Fremantle

Freo’s winter charm is all about heritage pubs, coffee shops and moody ocean views. Wander the Fremantle Markets, take a spooky torchlight prison tour, then warm up in a cosy bar with a tasty cocktail.

3. Go on a Swan Valley Wine Tour

Winter is the best time to slow down and savour what Swan Valley does best – wine, cheese and chocolate! The vines might be bare, but the cellar doors are warm and welcoming. Join a wine tour so you don’t have to worry about driving, and sip your way through the region at a relaxed pace.

4. Cosy Up Next to a Fire

Winter’s the season for open fires, and Perth has some cracking spots to enjoy one. Head to a hills pub like the Parkerville Tavern or the Guildford Hotel for a woodfired meal and a pint by the toasty fire. Exactly what you want on a cold afternoon!

5. Explore Rottnest Island

Winter’s actually a great time to visit Rotto. It’s quieter, the air’s crisp, and the coastal walks feel fresh rather than sweaty. Bring a jacket, hire a bike, and enjoy the island without the summer crowds. The quokkas are just as cute in winter and a lot easier to photograph without a ton of people crowding them!

Wrap up and take a wander along the South Perth Foreshore for some of the best views of the city skyline. It’s peaceful in winter, especially at dusk when the lights start to flicker on. There’s coffee nearby, playgrounds if you’ve got kids and best picnic spots if it’s not too rainy.

7. Visit the Pinnacles Desert

There’s something eerie and beautiful about the Pinnacles in winter – moody skies, long shadows and barely another soul around. It’s the best time for dramatic photos without the summer heat. Head up in the afternoon and stay for sunset if the skies are clear.

9. Walk Through Kings Park

Kings Park isn’t just for spring wildflowers. In winter, the crisp air and quieter paths make it ideal for a morning walk or a brisk loop before coffee. The views over the river and city are still just as good, but bring a jumper!

Perth Zoo and Caversham Wildlife Park are solid picks any time of year, but winter is actually one of the best times to go. The animals are more active in the cool weather, and with fewer visitors around, you can take your time without the crowds or heat.

11. Get Competitive at an Arcade

Arcades are the perfect winter escape – warm, loud, a bit nostalgic, and way more fun than scrolling your phone all afternoon. Whether you’re into retro classics, pinball, or claw machines, Perth’s arcade scene has had a glow-up in recent years.

Winter means truffle season in WA, and if you’ve never tried it fresh, now’s your chance. Head down to Manjimup for a truffle hunt or or join the Manjimup Truffle and Wine Festival in June. If you can’t get away, just book into a Perth venue doing truffle degustations or specials. Rich, earthy, and perfect for a cold night out.

14. Visit Elizabeth Quay

Elizabeth Quay quietens down in winter, which makes it a lovely spot for a peaceful stroll along the river. Grab a hot drink, check out the public art, or hop on the ferry for a breezy ride to South Perth. Less crowds, more room to take it in.

The Perth Hills are made for winter. Think rolling mist, fireplaces, and boutique wineries tucked into the forest. Bickley Valley’s wineries and cideries are ideal for a long lunch with local produce and a glass of red. Just make sure someone’s happy to drive.

Add cocktails, loud tunes and a bit of friendly competition, and you’ve got the perfect night out, rain or shine! There are venues in Northbridge and Carousel, both with food, drinks and plenty of photo ops.

Winter is hiking season in the Perth Hills. The air’s cool, the waterfalls are flowing, and the trails aren’t dry and dusty like in summer. Check out Lesmurdie Falls, the Bibbulmun Track, or Bells Rapids for scenic walks with fewer crowds and a lot more green.

Winter sunsets in Perth hit different – soft pastels, crisp air and glowing clouds. Find a west-facing spot (South Perth Foreshore, Reabold Hill, or even your local beach) and settle in with a takeaway coffee or mulled wine. Shorter days mean you don’t even have to wait long.

Winter’s cooler weather makes sandboarding way more bearable. Lancelin’s dunes are just over an hour from Perth and perfect for a quick hit of adrenaline without sweating through your shirt. Pack a beanie, not boardies, and embrace the wind in your face.

Fishing doesn’t stop in winter! In fact, it gets better in spots like Woodman Point, Hillarys or the Swan River. Tailor, bream, and squid are all around this time of year. Fewer people on the jetty and a thermos of coffee? That’s a good morning.

The dolphin cruises in Mandurah run all year, and winter often means calmer waters and more sightings. Bring a jacket and a sense of wonder – these wild dolphins are locals, not performers, and seeing them up close never gets old.

Margaret River in winter? Absolutely worth it. The forests are lush, the fireplaces are roaring, and the wineries are in full cosy mode. It’s only 3 hours from Perth, making it a perfect weekend escape when you need a break from the city.

28. Visit Fremantle Prison

Fremantle Prison is even spookier in winter, and that’s half the fun. Join a guided tour, or better yet, the torchlit night one,  and wander the cold stone corridors while hearing stories that’ll stick with you. Rain outside just adds to the atmosphere.

29. Warm Up in a Day Spa

When it’s grey and cold, treat yourself to a proper pamper session. Book into a local day spa like Bodhi Spa in the city, Keturah in Nedlands and Carine or head up to Amaroo Retreat & Spa in the hills. Think hot stone massages, saunas, and absolutely no guilt.

30. Enjoy a High Tea in the City

A cold winter afternoon is the perfect excuse for high tea. Head to The Westin, COMO The Treasury, or Chinta Café for tiered treats, hot tea and a bit of indulgence. Ideal if you’re not keen on walking around in the rain.

Need to shake off the winter slump? Book in for axe throwing at Lumber Punks in East Perth. It’s weirdly therapeutic, surprisingly fun and great for groups. Plus, it’s all indoors and toasty warm.

Escape rooms are built for winter – immersive, fun and completely weatherproof. Perth has plenty, from horror themes to Sherlock-style mysteries. Escape This, Lost Reality and Times Up are all worth a go.

Skip the blockbuster crowds and catch an indie flick or doco at one of Perth’s old-school cinemas. Luna Leederville and Windsor Cinema in Nedlands are cosy, character-filled, and perfect for a rainy evening.

Perth winters are mild by global standards, but it still gets chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings. Daytime temps usually sit between 8°C and 18°C, with the occasional shower.

Here’s what to pack:

• Layers: jumpers, long-sleeve tops, and a thermal or two if you feel the cold
• Jeans or long pants
• Comfortable, closed-toe shoes
• Umbrella or raincoat for wet days

Perth’s winter (June to August) is cooler, quieter, and honestly underrated. If you’re not fussed about beach days and prefer cosy cafés, moody walks, and smaller crowds, winter’s a great time to come. Accommodation is often cheaper too, and you’ll find plenty of indoor and seasonal experiences to keep you entertained.
