Of course, you could easily spend a whole week here and still not see everything – there’s SO much to do in this beautiful part of the world! But if you only have one day, this itinerary will help you hit the highlights, from the best snorkeling spots to the best places to see quokkas and grab a meal.
As a local, I’ve spent plenty of time exploring Rottnest, so you can trust this tried-and-tested itinerary to give you the best experience. Whether you’re into adventure, scenic views, or just kicking back with a cocktail by the water, I’ll show you what to do in Rottnest Island in one day.

How to Get to Rottnest Island
The most popular way to get to Rottnest Island is by ferry, with three main departure points:
- Barrack Street Jetty (Perth CBD) – Best for visitors staying in the city as it’s walking distance from most hotels
- Hillarys Boat Harbour – Great option for those staying in the northern suburbs.
- Fremantle – Fastest route to Rottnest, perfect if you’re staying in or near Fremantle.
The Best Rottnest Ferry Option
To maximise your time on the island, I recommend this ferry package via Get Your Guide, which includes bike hire and departs earlier than other services. The ferry leaves from Hillarys Boat Harbour but includes hotel transfers from Perth CBD, making it a convenient choice.

- Perth (Barrack Street Jetty) → Rottnest: approx. 90 minutes
- Hillarys Boat Harbour → Rottnest: approx. 45 minutes
- Fremantle → Rottnest: approx. 30 minutes

Getting Around Rottnest Island
Rottnest is car-free, which makes it so peaceful – I’m always shocked by how quiet it is! You’ll need to choose from these transport options:
Walking: The island is walkable and has some absolutely stunning walking trails (I love the Warden Nara Bidi Trail for the southern coastal views). However, since you only have one day, walking isn’t the best option, especially if you want to see multiple spots – biking or the bus will be more efficient.
Bike Hire: The most popular and flexible way to explore the island. I recommend choosing a ferry and bike hire package – I’ve seen so many people miss out when they haven’t booked ahead! Seriously, bikes book out fast on the island, especially in summer.
Inland parts of the island can get a little hilly so a moderate level of fitness is needed for this option. Alternatively, hire an ebike from Pedal and Flipper for extra pedal power to tackle the steep sections.
If you’re travelling with kids, Pedal and Flipper also rent children’s bikes and accessories like child trailers.
Bus: Hop-on-hop-off buses operate around the island and stop at major points. For extra convenience you can even choose a ferry service with included bus tour and hotel transfers.
Segway Tours: A fun (and unique!) alternative for those who want a guided experience. There are segway tours that take you through the Thomson Bay Settlement where you can learn about Australia’s history or tours that focus on the island’s military past.

Morning: Arrival and Snorkelling Adventure
Rottnest Island Bakery – Jump off the ferry and head here for a morning pastry and coffee to energise you for the day ahead. Keep an eye out for quokkas under the trees – they often hang out near the bakery! Try the famous jam donut or a classic meat pie.
Snorkelling at Little Salmon Bay & Parker Point – Make your way along the southern coastline to these two locations. They’re great for snorkelling in the morning while the water is calmer and clearer before the afternoon winds pick up. You’ll spot plenty of reef fish and coral.
If you don’t have your own snorkelling gear, you can hire it from Pedal & Flipper in the main settlement.
Adventurous Option: If you’re up for a morning thrill, and go skydiving for the ultimate view of Rottnest and its coastline before touching down on the island. Skydiving is one of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve ever done, so it’s perfect for making lasting memories of your Rotto trip. Skydive departs from Rottnest Airfield so head back to the main settlement after your snorkel and from there it’s just a 15-minute walk.
Foodie Option: If you’re a bit of a foodie and want to try some of WA’s finest seafood, I recommend the Luxe Island Seafood Cruise. You get to try your hand at catching Western Rock Lobster, before indulging in a 7 course seafood lunch paired with beautiful WA wines. You even get to swim off the boat! It runs from October to April and departs from the settlement in the late morning.
Alternative Route: Prefer a scenic inland ride/bus trip? Make your way past Salmon Bay, turn right and continue on the inland route. You’ll go past Wadjemup Lighthouse, Oliver Hill Lookout and past the island’s salt lakes. Check out the Pink Lake for a unique stop, it’s a natural phenomenon that changes colour due to algae and high salinity levels. It’s most vibrant in summer
Midday: Lighthouse, Lunch & Scenic Stops
Head to Bathurst Lighthouse – A short ride brings you to the historic lighthouse. It was built in 1900 after an iron ship sank off the coast and 12 lives were lost. You can’t go inside the lighthouse but Bathurst Point is also worth a look for the stunning panoramic views of the coastline.
Photo Tip: This is one of the best vantage points on the island. Capture shots of the iconic white lighthouse against the turquoise waters or perfect your panorama technique!
Lunch at Pinky’s Beach Club – Located near the lighthouse, this beachside bar offers fresh seafood, gourmet burgers, and delish cocktails with ocean views. It’s my personal favourite bar on the island – you can’t go past a seafood lunch in the sunshine!
- Budget Option: If you’re looking for a cheaper meal, pack a picnic and enjoy it at one of the shaded picnic tables near The Basin.
Afternoon: More Snorkelling, Quokka Spotting & Relaxing Drinks
After lunch, Take a dip at Pinky Beach which is accessible right from Pinky’s Beach Club. I can never resist jumping in the water here, it always looks so refreshing! Or just kick back on the sand and soak up the sun – bliss!
You can also head to The Basin nearby, which is ideal for a second round of snorkelling. While there are fewer fish, there’s so much pretty coral to check out. The shallow waters make it perfect for beginners, plus the protected bay is sheltered from the afternoon winds that pick up elsewhere in the island making it more enjoyable. Or just spend your arvo relaxing in the sun!
Head to the Main Settlement Along the way, look for quokkas, so you can snap your iconic quokka selfie! They become more active in the afternoon – check under shady bushes and trees.
Quokka Spotting Tips:
- The best time to see quokkas awake and active is in the late afternoon when they come out to feed.
- Look near the settlement and around shaded areas near buildings.
- Always respect their space and avoid touching and feeding them – human food isn’t safe for them.
Afternoon Drinks at Isola Bar e Cibo – End your day with a relaxing drink by the water before catching your return ferry.
- Best drinks: Aperol Spritz or Limoncello Spritz are top picks for a sunset toast
- Scenic Spot: Sit outside and watch the boats in the bay as the sun begins to set.
