Explore Rottnest Island
This little slice of paradise off the coast of Perth offers an unforgettable experience and is a must for any visitor to Perth. Just a quick ferry trip away, Rottnest Island is the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and soak up some nature.
Rottnest Island offers plenty of unique outdoor activities like cycling or walking the island tracks, relaxing on the beach, swimming, skydiving, snorkelling, kayaking and of course, getting that iconic snap with an adorable quokka!

Meet The Kangaroos On Heirisson Island
Heirisson Island is located on the Swan River, nestled between the inner-city suburbs of East Perth and Victoria Park. It’s a beautiful nature reserve and it’s also one of the easiest places to see kangaroos close to Perth!
A Family of friendly Western Grey Kangaroos call the island home and they will let you get up close and personal for an Iconic Australian photo – just remember to be respectful of wildlife and don’t feed the kangaroos. The best time to see the kangaroos is in the early morning or late afternoon.
Visitors can also enjoy the HeirissonIsland loop walk where they can take in this stunning nature reserve located in the heart of the city.
There are a number of Perth tours that make a stop at Heirisson Island, I recommend the Big Perth (Private) Day Tour.

See The Iconic Bell Tower
The Bell Tower is an architecturally impressive glass spire located just a 5-minute walk from Perth CBD in Barrack Square near the Swan River.
It was custom-built to house the bells of Saint Martin-in-the-Fields Church in London, which date back to the 14th Century. It is now also home to the ANZAC bell as well.
Today it’s one of WA’s most iconic and visited attractions. Visitors can climb up to the Observation Deck for panoramic views of the city and Swan River before watching the live bell ringing demonstrations and learning about the intricate art of bell ringing.
The bell tower opening hours vary seasonally, but it generally opens daily from 10am excluding Good Friday and Christmas Day and opens from 12pm on ANZAC day.

Explore Kings Park And Botanic Gardens
Kings Park and Botanic Gardens is an absolute gem – particularly for nature lovers. It’s one of the largest inner city parks in the world and is home to stunning botanic gardens and breathtaking views of the city and Swan River.
Visitors can enjoy a treetop view on the Lotterywest Federation Walkway, let the kids run wild at the many play areas, wander through the expansive lawns, check out the wildflowers that are in bloom in August and pay respects at the State War Memorial.
Personally, one of my favourite Perth activities is a Kings Park picnic overlooking the city at dusk – watching the sun slowly fade and the city lights turn on is absolute bliss. Check out my Guide to the Ultimate Perth Picnic for more Perth picnic inspo.
Go On A Road Trip To Cervantes
If you’re looking to escape the cooler winter weather in August, why not head north on a road trip to Cervantes. Located just 2 hours north of Perth, Cervantes is a quaint fishing town, famous for its fresh crayfish (Western Australian Rock Lobster).

Have A Perfect Day Out In Fremantle
Fremantle is a Port City in WA that is located just a 30 minute drive south of Perth. It has a rich maritime and convict history and today has a vibrant, artistic culture.
Start your day at Fremantle. I recommend heading to the Iconic Fremantle Markets where you can shop for artisan goods, local produce, toys, clothes and much more. You can also enjoy the live music as you grab a bite to eat at one of the many delicious food stalls – I recommend the Latin flavours of Kachapas.
Next head to Fremantle Prison. As you step into the dark corridors and explore the haunting cells you’ll uncover stories of convicts and prisoners who once inhabited it. There are also eerie night tours for people looking for an extra-thrilling experience.
Next, head to the WA Shipwrecks Museum, housed within Fremantle’s historic Commissariat Building. This fascinating museum will take you on a captivating journey through WA’s rich maritime history, including plenty of stories of treacherous shipwrecks that have occurred off the coast.
Finally, finish your day in style by winding down with a seafood platter and cocktail on the sand at Bathers Beach House. Be sure to book a beach lounge at sunset so you can lay back and take in the stunning view as the sun sets over the ocean with your cocktail in hand.
See Two Oceans Meet At Cape Leeuwin
Another unforgettable August road trip is Perth to Cape Leeuwin. Cape Leeuwin marks the meeting point of the Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean and is a 3.5 hour drive south of Perth.
In August you’ll witness dramatic coastal views as the waves crash against the rugged cliffs – it will be windy, but that makes the spectacular sight even more powerful. You can explore the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, take a coastal walk and even spot whales as they pass by on their annual migration journey.
Wander Through The WA Museum Boola Bardip
Located in Perth’s Cultural Centre, WA Museum Boola Bardip offers a great day out for visitors to Perth. Boola Bardip translates to ‘many stories’ in Whadjuk Noongar which is a fitting name for the space.
Wandering through the museum, you’ll learn about WA’s rich Aboriginal heritage as well as the state’s unique flora and fauna. You’ll discover the interesting world of natural history, science and culture. There are interactive displays and always plenty of fascinating exhibitions.
The museum offers a perfect escape from the occasional chillier and rainier days of August.
Enjoy A Swan River Wine Cruise
If you’re in Perth this August, hop aboard a Swan Valley wine cruise for an unforgettable experience. You’ll be able to see the sights of Perth from a unique perspective.
Picture yourself cruising along the scenic river, sipping on the region’s award-winning wines and soaking in the beautiful views. The best Swan Valley Wine Cruise is the Swan Valley Gourmet Wine Cruise from Perth.
The cruise departs from Barrack Street Jetty. While you take in the riverfront scenery, you’ll enjoy morning tea followed by wine tastings with a cheese board. The tour stops at Sandalford Estate for a behind-the-scenes tour, grazing table lunch and tasting flight of wines. Back onboard you’ll be treated to afternoon tea, entertainment and more wine!

Perth’s most famous cruise!
Cruise the Swan River as you enjoy premium wines and a gourmet lunch and learn about the wine-making process at Sandalford Estate Winery
Have Breakfast And A Walk At Hyde Park
Hyde Park is one of Perth’s most popular parks and with its huge trees and tranquil lakes it’s not hard to see why. The park is located in the inner-city suburb of Highgate and is the perfect spot for a weekend morning walk.
Grab a pastry and a coffee from the nearby CHU bakery for Breakfast and find a nice spot on the grass to relax and take in the morning.
Have Fish And Chips At City Beach
City Beach is located just 15 minutes from Perth CBD and is known for its white sandy beaches, bright turquoise water and chic atmosphere. And what better way to enjoy the beach than by enjoying fish and chips as you take in the stunning view?
Clancy’s Fish Bar City Beach has a stunning view of the Indian Ocean and is the perfect spot for snapper and chips and a beer while you watch the windsurfers cruise up the coast.
Climb And Zipline The Matagarup Bridge
This one’s for the adventure-seekers! Matagarup Bridge is quickly becoming a Perth icon – it’s a relatively new bridge that lets pedestrians cross from East Perth to Burswood. The design resembles two flying swans and the name of the bridge and surrounding area, Matagarup, means ‘a place where the river is only leg deep, allowing it to be crossed.’
The bridge alone is well worth a visit, but why not make the most of it by doing a bridge climb and zipline adventure. There’s a range of climbing and zip-lining packages to choose from, but I recommend the Zip + Climb experience.
You’ll get to climb the bridge up to the SkyView tower, which is 72 metres above the river, before ziplining back to home base, reaching up to 75 km/h! You’ll have an unforgettable experience and catch some spectacular views of the city.
Explore Perth’s Small Bars
Perth is home to some pretty unique little bars and what better time to explore them than in August, when the weather is chilly!
Cosy up with a wine, sip on a beautifully crafted cocktail or taste a range of whiskeys – whatever your style you’ll find the perfect bar in Perth.
Here are some small bars you need to check out:
- Goody Two’s – Japanese inspired basement bar serving up whiskies and cocktails
- Foxtrot Unicorn – Eclectic underground bar mixing up creative cocktails
- Bobeche – Bohemian bar specialising in cocktails and snacks
- Alabama Song – Honkey tonk country bar with an impressive whiskey and bourbon list

Explore Perth’s Cycle Trails
Biking through the city is one of the best and most eco-friendly ways to see all the sights Perth has to offer. Perth has a great network of cycle paths from casual scenic beach trails to thrilling bush mountain bike tracks.
For visitors to the city, I recommend the Perth Discoverer Cycle Trail. It’s a 27 km loop that circles the Swan River and winds through Kings Park. You’ll see all the best Perth has to offer including Elizabeth Quay, Yagan Square, South Perth Foreshore and Optus Stadium.
Set aside plenty of time: it’s approximately 2 hours of riding time, but trust me, you’ll want to make plenty of stops along the way to take in the scenery.
Visitors can rent a bike or join a bike tour.
Visit The Perth Mint
The Perth Mint is Australia’s oldest operating mint and well worth a stop on your visit to Perth this August.
Join a tour to check out the huge one tonne gold coin, watch a live traditional gold pour, see some impressive gold nuggets and wander through the beautiful building and grounds.
Perth Mint is open daily and tours run every hour from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.
Go on a Margaret River Road Trip
Even though it’s technically low season, August is a great time to visit the world-renowned wine region – Margaret River. The winter rains make the region lush and green and the cooler temperatures call for cosy wood fires and red wine!
When visiting Margaret River in August make sure you do a wine tour, visit the stunning beaches and explore the region’s caves.
