4. Go Stargazing at the Pinnacles
Just 2 hours north of Perth you’ll find an otherworldly landscape – thousands of limestone pillars jutting out from the earth! Exploring Pinnacles Desert is an experience not to be missed and the best way to see them is at sunset when they begin to cast dramatic shadows over the desert and the sky turns pretty shades of pink and purple as the sun goes down.

5. Explore Margaret River
Margaret River, or Margs as we affectionately call it, is a must-visit in December for anyone who loves a good drop! It’s home to world-famous wineries and the best outdoor and adventure spots – from internationally renowned surf beaches to Karri forests to limestone caves. Take a day trip or spend the weekend exploring the region’s vineyards (there’s over 200 of them!), where you can taste award-winning wines and enjoy gourmet seasonal produce at the local restaurants, drive the winding roads and take in the stunning countryside. Most of the wineries offer guided tastings and behind-the-scenes tours and it’s the perfect way to discover why Margaret River is known as one of Australia’s top wine regions.
Top Tip: Margaret River is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay – make sure you taste these!
There’s a couple of ways to do Margaret River. The easiest is by joining a Margaret River Tour that departs from Perth. You’ll get to see some iconic landmarks on the way like the Busselton Jetty, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and Mammoth Cave and lunch with tastings at a brewery and the guides are super knowledgeable.

If you want to explore at your own pace, I recommend renting a car. I use DiscoverCars so I can compare deals to find the best price. If you have the time, I recommend staying in Margaret River for around 3 days, that way you can spend a whole day checking out the wineries and still have time to explore the coastline, wander through Boranup Karri forest and discover the caves.
