I usually head down south during the July school holidays – it’s become a bit of a tradition. Even though it’s cold and rainy, winter in Margaret River is just cosy. The smell of wood fires drifting through the trees, misty mornings over the vineyards and the lush, rain-soaked green you only get this time of year. It’s quieter too with less crowds to compete with – just cosy days, long lunches, and plenty of reasons to slow down.

July is smack bang in the middle of winter down in Margs, so you can expect chilly mornings, rainy afternoons, and that beautiful scent of eucalyptus after the rain! It’s the wettest month of the year, but if you ask me, that only adds to the region’s moody (and green!) winter charm. Here’s everything you need to know about the weather in July

The average daily temperature in Margaret River during July sits around 11°C to 16°C (52°F to 61°F). Mornings often start brisk (sometimes dipping below 10°C / 50°F). Nights are properly cold, though, so if you’re heading out after dark, pack the puffer!

July is the rainiest month in Margaret River, with around 180mm (7.1 inches) of rainfall spread across roughly 18 days. Expect regular showers, and sometimes a few solid downpours thrown in too. But in between the rain, there are still plenty of bright, clear stretches so you can still explore outside.

Winter in Margaret River is my favourite time to visit. It’s less crowded. The landscape is lush green and moody with mist and rain. Plus you really get to cosy-up! There are warm fireplaces to discover and sip wine next to. 

1. Go on a Wine Tour

2. Hit the Trails in Boranup Forest

The towering karri trees glisten with rain in winter, and the smell of damp earth and eucalyptus is something else. The Boranup lookout is a must after a decent downpour – it looks like a rainforest. The beaut thing about this one is you can hike through it when the weather permits, or take the tourist drive through it if it’s a rainy July day. 

3. Indulge in a Long Lazy Lunch

July is all about slow food. Book in for a long lunch at one of the region’s many restaurants or wineries to try local, seasonal produce.

• Leeuwin Estate – the ultimate tasting experience was one of the best lunches of my entire life!
• Rustico at Hay Shed Hill – delicious tapas
• Swings and Roundabouts – a crowd favourite

4. Explore Lake Cave on a Stormy Day

Margaret River is home to a stunning network of limestone caves. This time of year they feel even more mysterious! Lake Cave is especially beautiful in winter with its underground lake reflecting eerie limestone formations. It’s the perfect rainy-day activity.

5. Truffle Season Feasting

If you’re a truffle fan, you’re in luck. Local restaurants and producers celebrate truffle season with rich, earthy dishes. Look out for special truffle menus or even stock up when visiting the local shops.

6. Visit the Margaret River Chocolate Company

Because chocolate and winter go hand-in-hand. Free tastings, hot chocolate at the café, and a warm spot to escape the rain. What more could you want?

7. Take a Scenic Drive Along Caves Road

I normally hate driving, but not when down south! Fewer cars on the road in winter makes this iconic drive even better. Cruise through karri forests, past sweeping coastal views and hidden cellar doors. Perfect with a thermos of tea and your favourite playlist (I recommend Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Dire Straits for this one – the vibe fits) 

8. Cosy Up in a Luxury Stay

If you have a special occasion to celebrate in July, this one’s for you. On one of my favourite Margaret River Getaways I stayed at Losari Retreat. It was really the most relaxing experience: views of kangaroos hopping over the green grass through the morning fog, cosy fireplaces and a PRIVATE (!!!) spa – warm enough to use in the middle of winter, glass of sparkling wine in hand. Absolute bliss!

9. Catch Live Music at Settlers Tavern

The Tav is warm, loud, and exactly where you want to be on a cold winter night. There’s live music most weekends and good pub food with local beers on tap. It’s perfect for a laid-back evening. 

10. Walk the Cape to Cape Track (in Parts)

The whole track runs for a whopping 123 km between the lighthouses of Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturaliste, but you don’t have to do the whole thing – it’s also a popular trail to tackle in chunks. My favourite part is the stretch between Smiths Beach and Canal Rocks. It takes about an hour one-way and goes past coastal scrub, over granite rocks and past stunning ocean views. Winter is a great time to do it as it’s not sweltering hot – just choose a clear winter day. 

11. Watch the Storms Roll In at Redgate Beach

Redgate in July is wild and moody. Bring a jacket, park up, and let the roaring surf and wind clear your head. It’s especially good if you’re into photography or just want to feel tiny next to nature.

12. Sip Gin by the Fireplace at Margaret River Distilling Co.

Margaret River Distilling Co. is a must in winter. Their cocktail menu is always a treat – try a warming negroni or their classic gin with rosemary and orange twist, best enjoyed indoors while the rain taps on the windows.

13. Go on a Canoe Tour

I highly recommend going on the Margaret River Canoe Tour – I did this one with my sister on my last trip down south and we had an incredible day. Emma was an amazing guide – we learned so much about the history of the area as we canoed down the river. We stopped for a super unique bush tucker lunch and took a dip in the river (I would probably skip this part in winter!) before canoeing back. I will definitely be bringing other people to do this one, it’s fantastic value for money. 

14. Take a Winter Surf Lesson

Yes, it’s cold, but the waves are pumping and you’ll be in a wetsuit. There’s something pretty exhilarating about braving the chilly water, and you’ll have more space in the line-up too. Margaret River Surfing Academy runs private lessons or small group classes to teach you all the skills! They cater to people of all ages and experience levels and their coaches are well qualified so you’re in good hands!

15. Snuggle Up by the Fire at a Cellar Door

Plenty of Margaret River wineries come alive in winter, with roaring log fires, hearty winter menus, and big bold reds to warm your insides. My personal favourite winter wineries with cosy fireplaces or lush green views are:

17. Go Beer Tasting at Wild Hop or Beerfarm

If wine isn’t your thing, Margaret River’s got you sorted with some cracking breweries. Both have big, welcoming spaces perfect for winter, with great food and even better beer. Beerfarm has lovely sprawling views of the countryside and Wild Hop is a great spot for families.

Where to Stay in Margaret River in July

If you’re heading down in July, make your stay a part of the experience. This is the season for long baths, wood fires, plush robes and views you can enjoy while staying warm indoors. Here are three standout places to stay this winter:

• Pullman Bunker Bay Resort: This one’s a stunner if you’re after ocean views with creature comforts. The villas are spacious, the fireplaces are real, and the on-site spa is just what you need on a drizzly day. It’s a bit of a drive from town, but waking up to that beach in winter? Worth it.
  
• Losari Retreat: Tucked into the bush just outside Margaret River, this is the kind of place you book when you want to go all out. Private villas with outdoor spas, wood fires, and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over misty forest. Ideal for anniversaries, honeymoons or just escaping the noise.
  
• Margaret River Resort: If you want to stay close to town and keep things simple, this is a solid winter base. It’s walking distance to the pubs and cafes, with comfy rooms and a cosy on-site bar (The Knight’s Inn) that’s great for a pint and a pub meal when the weather turns.

What to Wear in Margaret River in July

It’s proper winter down in Margs in July, so pack like you’re going to be spending time by the fire and ducking between cellar doors in the rain. Layers are key. Bring warm jumpers, a waterproof jacket, jeans or long pants, and something you won’t mind getting a bit muddy if you’re heading into the bush. A good pair of boots (water-resistant if possible) will go a long way.

Even if the sun pops out, it’s rarely warm enough for short sleeves – but a cosy beanie and scarf will be perfect for those crisp mornings and windy beach walks. And yes, always pack bathers… because who can resist a hot spa?

When is the Best Time to Visit Margaret River?

Margaret River shines year-round, but July is perfect if you’re after fewer crowds, cosy fires and moody winter scenery. It’s cooler and wetter, sure, but that’s part of the charm. Wineries are quiet, forests are lush, and accommodation is easier to book.
