There’s something about April in Perth that just feels right. Maybe it’s the way the light softens, or how the city finally gets a breather after the long, hot summer. Mornings are crisp and afternoons are sunny, making it one of the best months to be outdoors.

As a Perth local, I reckon April is seriously underrated. The beaches are still warm enough for a swim but the crowds have thinned out. It’s the perfect mix of laid-back summer vibes and the calm of early autumn.

If you’re planning a trip around the school holidays or Easter long weekend, you’ll find loads to do, from ANZAC Day services, to special events. Plus, it’s an ideal time for day trips to the Perth Hills or the Swan Valley: think cool mornings, golden light, and that satisfying crunch of leaves underfoot. Let me show you what makes this month a gem here in WA’s sunny capital.

Weather in Perth in April

April is when Perth starts to breathe a little easier after the intensity of summer. As it’s mid-autumn, the heat softens and evenings cool off nicely. It’s that sweet spot between the dry heat of March and the proper chill of winter. If you’re not a fan of scorching days or sudden downpours, this month is ideal, warm enough to enjoy the outdoors without constantly searching for shade. Average Temperature in Perth in April

April in Perth is beautifully mild. We’re usually looking at daytime temperatures around 25°C, with the occasional warmer day early in the month. Mornings and evenings dip to around 13-15°C, which is perfect for those who enjoy a light jacket and a morning coffee in the fresh air. You’ll still get days that feel summery, especially in the first couple of weeks, but overall it’s a lot more comfortable than the peak summer heat.

Average Rainfall in Perth in April

Rain starts to creep back into the picture in April, but it’s still relatively dry by Perth standards. On average, we get about 30-40 mm of rainfall across the month, usually spread over 5 or 6 days. A light rain jacket or umbrella doesn’t go astray, but you’ll mostly have clear skies to enjoy.

What Time is Sunrise and Sunset in Perth in April?

One of the lovely things about April is how the daylight hours shift just enough to make mornings feel cosy and evenings wind down a bit earlier.

• Sunrise is usually between 6:20 am and 6:45 am.
  
• Sunset starts around 6:30 pm at the beginning of the month and edges earlier to about 5:50 pm by the end.

UV Levels in Perth in April

Even though it’s autumn, the sun doesn’t muck around in WA. The UV index still sits in the high range for most of April at around 6 to 8, depending on the day. That means sun protection is still a must, especially if you’re planning to be outside for a while. Make sure you protect yourself with sunscreen, sunnies and a hat.

Is Perth Cloudy in April?

You’ll notice a bit more cloud cover in April compared to summer, but it’s still mostly sunny with blue skies more often than not. On average, Perth sees about 9-10 cloudy days during the month.

Is Perth Windy in April?

April tends to be calmer than the blustery days of summer. The strong afternoon sea breezes eases up a little, but you’ll still feel it along the coast. Average wind speeds drop to around 14-16 km/h (8.7 to 9.9 mph)

How Humid is Perth in April?

Humidity in April is pretty mild and fairly comfortable. It generally sits between 45% and 60%, so you won’t get that heavy, muggy feeling when you’re out and about. 

Does it Snow?

Not in Perth, mate! Snow is a total no-show here – April or any time of year. If you’re chasing snow in WA, the closest you’ll get is the Stirling Ranges in deep winter, and even that’s rare.

18 Things To Do in Perth in April

April in Perth is one of my favourite months – it’s that perfect sweet spot between summer and winter. Here are 18 unique and seasonal things to do in Perth in April.

1. Attend an ANZAC Day Dawn Service

If you’re in Perth on April 25th, I highly recommend setting your alarm early for an ANZAC Day dawn service. It’s a moving, uniquely Australian experience that offers a chance to pause and reflect. Kings Park hosts the city’s main service and it’s a powerful scene – thousands gathering before sunrise in silence, surrounded by native bush and city views. Bring something warm, arrive early (it gets busy), and expect a solemn but beautiful morning. Afterwards, many locals head to a café for breakfast or stick around to watch the veterans’ march through the city.

2. Spend a Day on Rottnest Island

April is one of the best times to visit Wadjemup. The summer crowds have eased, but the ocean’s still warm enough for a dip. Pack your swimmers, hire a bike and explore hidden bays like Little Parakeet and Salmon Bay. There’s plenty of wildlife too: think quokkas, ospreys, and even the odd dolphin off the coast. I recommend catching the early ferry so you’ve got a full day to soak it all in.

3. Take a Pinnacles Sunset & Stargazing Tour

April’s clear skies make it perfect for stargazing, and the Pinnacles Desert is one of the most incredible spots to do it. Picture this: the sun setting over alien-like limestone formations, followed by a blanket of stars in one of the darkest skies in WA. I did a guided tour that included dinner under the stars and telescopes – unreal. You also get a stop at Lancelin for some sandboarding fun earlier in the day, so it’s an epic full-day adventure.

4. Enjoy a Swan River Dinner Cruise

If you’re in the mood to slow things down, a dinner cruise along the Swan River is the way to go. You’ll glide past the city skyline, Kings Park, and riverside mansions, all while tucking into a buffet and sipping on local wine. It’s super relaxing and a great way to take in Perth from a new angle as the city lights up for the night. Book your dinner cruise ahead because this one sells out!

5. Wander Through Araluen Botanic Park’s Autumn Colours

Autumn at Araluen is something else. You’ll find big old maples, golden elms, and crunchy leaves underfoot – pretty rare for WA! I love grabbing a takeaway coffee, finding a quiet bench, and just soaking up the change of season. It’s peaceful, photogenic, and makes for a beautiful half-day trip into the hills.

6. Explore Kalamunda Village & Trails

Kalamunda in April is cosy and colourful, with a proper autumn feel you don’t often get in Perth. Start with brekkie at one of the cute cafés in town, then wander the Zig Zag Cultural Centre or check out the art galleries. If you’re up for a walk, the Bibbulmun Track trailhead starts here, and the nearby Rocky Pool walk is a local fave.

7. Go Wine Tasting in the Swan Valley

April’s a brilliant time to explore the Swan Valley. The season is wrapping up, so cellar doors are a bit more relaxed and you’ll get great chats with the winemakers. The reds are full-bodied and warming, perfect for the cooler evenings. If you want to explore the Swan Valley, a wine tour is the way to go – you don’t want to have to drive between each spot!

8. Catch the Sunset at Cottesloe Beach

April is a great time to enjoy Perth’s beaches – the weather’s still warm enough for a swim, and you won’t have to wrestle for towel space. I love grabbing fish and chips from Amberjacks and heading down just before sunset. Watching the sun sink into the Indian Ocean never gets old. 9. Kayak on the Swan River

If you’re after a peaceful morning, rent a kayak from Funcats Watersport in Sir James Mitchell Park in South Perth . The river is usually glassy in the morning during this time of year, and you’ll often see black swans and even dolphins if you’re lucky! Funcats also hire out catamarans and SUPs if you’re after something a little different. 

10. Explore Fremantle

Freo’s always got a good vibe, and April is the perfect time for a day of exploring! Start with a coffee at Moore & Moore, then wander the streets. You’ll spot street art, stunning colonial architecture and plenty of cute boutiques. Pop into some local shops and grab lunch at the markets or a pint at one of the historic pubs.

11. Watch the Footy at Optus Stadium

Whether you’re team Eagles or team Dockers (or just along for the fun), catching an AFL game at Optus Stadium is a classic WA experience and in April the season is just getting started. Even if you’re not into footy, it’s worth checking out for the fun atmosphere. 

12. Visit Lake Monger for a Morning Walk

April mornings are crisp and clear – ideal for a walk around Lake Monger. It’s a flat 3.5km loop that’s popular with joggers, dog walkers, and birdwatchers. You’ll likely see pelicans and our iconic black swans.

13. Take a Day Trip to York

York is WA’s oldest inland town and only a 90-minute drive from Perth. In April, the wheatbelt starts to show hints of autumn colour, and the drive itself is scenic. Explore the town’s heritage buildings, visit the quirky sock factory, or just enjoy a country pub lunch and a wander through the old streets.

14. Head to Yanchep National Park

This one’s a family favourite. You can stroll around the lake, spot koalas in the treetops, and explore the limestone caves on a guided tour. There’s also BBQ areas if you want to make a day of it. It’s an easy day trip from the city and especially nice in April when it’s not too hot.

15. Enjoy Fish & Chips at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour

Grab a seat by the water at Kailis or Cicerello’s and dig into a plate of crispy fish and chips. The sea breeze, seagulls squawking, boats coming and going – it’s the kind of simple pleasure that just hits right. April evenings are perfect for it too, just bring a jumper for when the sun goes down.

16. Discover Street Art in Fremantle

Fremantle’s streets and laneways are bursting with creativity. April is perfect weather for walking tours or doing your own thing with a camera in hand. Some of my favourite murals are tucked away in unexpected spots – just follow the colours and you’ll find them.

17. Take a Scenic Drive to the Perth Hills

If you’ve got a car, a drive through the Perth Hills in April is an easy win. Wind through forested roads, stop at lookouts like Lions Lookout or Mundaring Weir, and maybe finish with a long lunch at a winery or café. The light this time of year makes everything look a bit more golden.

18. Hike in John Forrest National Park

John Forrest is WA’s oldest national park and a great place for a half-day hike. There are a few walking trails that’ll take you through jarrah forest, past old railway bridges, and out to waterfalls that might be flowing if there’s been early autumn rain. Keep an eye out for kangaroos along the way – they’re often just chilling on the path.

Best Time to Visit Perth

As a Perth local, I genuinely think there’s no bad time to visit – each season brings something special. Summer (December to February) is all about long beach days, warm nights, and summer festivals! Autumn, especially April, is one of my favourite months – the weather is still beautifully warm but not too hot, and the city starts to slow down just enough to feel relaxed.
