What is a Spray Tan?

A spray tan is a fantastic way to look glowy and bronzed without taking the risks associated with UV exposure.

A spray tan involves standing in a spray tan booth or tent and having a tanning solution sprayed onto your body in a fine mist.

Depending on the product used, you may leave the tent looking super brown – but don’t worry! This is mostly guide colour, which helps the tanning artist ensure the body is evenly covered. This can usually be washed off in 1-6 hours after the spray tan and the colour will darken on the skin in the following hours.

How do Spray Tans work?

Tanning solution contains a chemical called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA reacts with the outer layer of the skin and causes these skin cells to darken.

As our skin is constantly shedding dead skin cells, the tan will need to be reapplied periodically. A spray tan will last anywhere from 5 days to two weeks and has little to do with the tanning product chosen. The rate at which your skin sheds and tan aftercare will determine how long the tan lasts on your skin.

How to prepare your skin for a spray tan

It’s important to prepare your skin properly for your spray tan to get the best results and the best possible looking tan. Read on for general tips on prepping your skin for a spray tan, but always consult with your spray tan artist for specific instructions that apply to the brand of tan they will be using.

Exfoliate every day for a few days leading up to the tan with a loofah or dry brush. This gets rid of dead skin cells and creates a smooth base for the tan to stick to.

Take care not to use oil-based products like sugar or coffee scrubs as these can leave a barrier on the skin which will stop the tan from being absorbed and can cause streakiness. On the day of your tan skip the post-exfoliation moisturiser – the tan will work better if the skin is dry and product-free.

Don’t do your hair removal too close to your appointment. Shave the day before your spray tan so the skin isn’t irritated at the time of your tan. It’s also best not to wax within 24 hours of your appointment as this opens your pores and the tanning product can build up within them, making it look patchy and uneven.

If you’ve got an important event coming up, it’s best to fake tan 2 days before. This gives your tan time to fully develop and settle into your skin.

What to wear during a spray tan

This will mostly depend on personal preference – if you’re unsure speak to your tanning artist. There are 3 main options: nothing, underwear, or paper g-string.

While tanning naked is the most daunting option, you will get the best spray tan as you won’t have tan lines caused by underwear.

Tanning in your underwear is the best option for maximum modesty but keep in mind you will have thicker tan lines where your underwear covers.

Most tanning studios offer their clients disposable paper g-strings to wear while tanning. These are pretty thin so tan lines will be minimal but you’ll feel a little more covered than tanning naked.

What to wear after your spray tan

You’ll need to be careful with your spray tan in the hours following the tan so it doesn’t rub off and get streaky.

It’s best to choose loose, flowy clothes to go home in – that way they won’t rub the tan off. Avoid tight-fitting clothes and wearing a bra as these will rub away the tan leaving skin streaky.

It’s best to wear dark colours too, as the guide colour may stain clothes or other fabrics (avoid sitting on your couch too!).

How to make your tan last longer

There are a few things you can do to make your tan last as long as possible.

When having your first shower to wash off the tan keep it short and lukewarm.

In the days following your tan keep your skin as hydrated as possible – moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Dry skin will flake off more easily and your tan will disappear.

Avoid harsh soaps, chemicals, scrubbing and exfoliating – these will wear away that outer layer of skin, taking your fake tan with it.

Wear sunscreen! It’s so important to note that while fake tanning is the healthier sun-free option it doesn’t protect you from those UV rays. Be sun smart and protect your skin.
