Bathers Beach isn’t Perth’s biggest or flashiest stretch of sand, but it’s one of my favourites, and definitely one of the most underrated. Right in the heart of Fremantle, it’s the only beach in WA where you can legally enjoy a drink on the sand. My first visit involved sunset cocktails at Bathers Beach House and I’ve been hooked ever since!
It’s not a surf beach or a big swimming spot, but it’s perfect for a dip, a sundowner and soaking up some sun on your next Freo day out. You’re just steps from the Round House, the Maritime Museum, street buskers and Little Creatures. If you’re already in Freo or just after a sunset beach with good vibes and easy access, Bathers is a solid pick.

If you’re heading for a day out at Bathers Beach, here are the best things to do:
1. Watch the Sunset Over the Indian Ocean
Bathers Beach is one of the best spots in Freo to watch the sun dip into the Indian Ocean – and it was actually one of the first places I ever saw a sunset over the water (a total novelty after growing up on the East Coast!). I usually head down just before golden hour, grab a spot on the sand or perch on the steps near the boardwalk and soak it all in.
2. Explore the Round House and Heritage Precinct
Just up from Bathers is the Round House – the oldest public building in WA, built in 1831 as a colonial jail. It was originally used to hold convicts and is part of Fremantle’s early settler history. You can walk through the tunnel beneath it, explore the tiny holding cells, and head up the hill for panoramic views over the beach and Fremantle Port.
3. Enjoy a Beachfront Drink at Bathers Beach House
You can’t visit Bathers without stopping by Bathers Beach House – it’s the only spot in WA where you can legally enjoy a drink on the sand. I’ve spent heaps of summer arvos here with mates, sipping cocktails and watching the waves roll in. Make sure you book a beach lounge so you don’t miss out!

4. Go for a Swim
Bathers isn’t a surf beach, and that’s exactly why I love it! The water’s usually calm and shallow, making it great for a relaxing swim or a lazy float, especially for kids. It’s fairly sheltered from the wind, especially in the late arvo when the Freo Doctor kicks in. If you’re after a stress-free swim without waves or rips, this is a beaut spot.
5. Go for a Walk Along the Foreshore
If you’re not up for a swim, a wander along the foreshore is a great way to soak up the Bathers Beach atmosphere. The path winds past sculptures, historic buildings, and working boats, with ocean views the whole way. Grab a takeaway coffee from a nearby café and just wander.

6. Visit the WA Maritime Museum
Just a short walk from Bathers, the WA Maritime Museum is a top pick if you’re into ships, submarines or anything sea-related. It’s packed with fascinating stories – from historic pearling luggers to Australia II. I went in thinking I’d stay for 30 minutes and ended up there for two hours. It’s also a good backup plan for hot or windy days when the beach isn’t calling.
7. Grab Fish and Chips Nearby
You can’t go wrong with classic fish and chips by the water. There are a few great options nearby – Cicerello’s and Kailis’ are the most well-known and both are just a short walk from the sand. Grab a takeaway, find a bench or a shady spot and enjoy. Just watch out for the seagulls – they’re fearless and they know what chips smell like!
8. Relax on the Sand
Sometimes the best thing to do at Bathers Beach is… nothing! It’s a small stretch of sand, but it rarely feels overcrowded. Bring a towel, maybe a book, and just enjoy the sun.
9. Snap Photos of the Working Port
I’ve always found something oddly mesmerising about watching the giant cargo ships come and go from Fremantle Port. You get a great view from Bathers Beach or the grassy area near the Round House. It’s a totally different side of the coast – gritty, industrial and full of movement. If you’re into photography, definitely bring your camera.
10. Visit the Fremantle Markets
No trip to Bathers Beach is complete without a visit to the Fremantle Markets. It’s only a 10-minute walk away and packed with everything from fresh fruit and handmade soaps to food trucks and boho clothes. I usually swing by on the weekend, grab a snack or a juice, and have a wander before heading back to the beach.
10. Wander Through the Whalers Tunnel
Right beneath the Round House you’ll find the Whalers Tunnel, which is the first underground tunnel built in WA. It runs from the beachside boardwalk under the Round House and out to the heritage precinct on the other side. It’s short but adds a bit of atmosphere to your visit, especially with the old limestone walls and the history behind it. It’s a cool little detour that most people walk straight past.

There are heaps of great coffee spots within walking distance of Bathers Beach, and one of my favourite things to do is grab a flat white and settle in somewhere along the boardwalk or nearby benches. - Bathers Beach House: Right on the sand with some of the best views in Freo. The menu’s modern Aussie – think seafood platters, burgers, and decent veggie options. - Cicerello’s: A Freo classic. Big serves of fish and chips, old-school charm, and a prime spot in Fishing Boat Harbour. It’s usually packed, so I often grab takeaway and eat by the water.
- Gino’s: Not right on the beach, but worth the short walk up the Cappuccino Strip. Gino’s has been doing strong coffee and hearty Italian for decades. Great for brekkie or a laid-back lunch.

Bathers Beach is located at Mews Road – right in the heart of Fremantle, so getting there is pretty straightforward, whether you’re training it in or braving the car parks.
By Train
Jump on the Fremantle Line from Perth Station – it takes about 30 minutes and drops you at Fremantle Station, just a 10-minute walk from the beach. Head through the historic West End (it’s all heritage buildings and cute little shops), and follow signs to the Round House or Fishing Boat Harbour – both will lead you straight to the sand.
By Car
You can drive, but parking in Freo is famously painful. There’s paid parking near Fishing Boat Harbour, Esplanade Park, and along Marine Terrace, but it fills up fast – especially on weekends or when the weather’s good. Best bet? Arrive early, or be prepared to circle a few times and walk it in.
Best Time to Visit Bathers Beach
You can visit Bathers Beach any time of year, it’s one of those spots that always has something going for it. But if you’re chasing swim weather, golden light and a chilled-out vibe, some months are better than others.
Best months to go:
- October to April: These are the sweet months for beach days. Expect warm weather, longer evenings and those classic Freo sunsets that light up the whole sky.
- Late summer (Feb–March): My personal pick. The water’s warmer, the sea breeze usually kicks in later, and the summer crowds start to thin out.
Even in winter, it’s worth a visit for a beach walk or a drink by the firepit at one of the nearby bars.
Bathers Beach Facilities
Bathers Beach keeps things pretty low-key, but there are a few essentials to know before you go:
- Public toilets: There are no dedicated public toilets right on the beach.
- Timber seating and shaded spots: You’ll find some timber seating and shaded areas along the walkway, perfect for a quick rest or to enjoy the view.
- No BBQs or playgrounds: Bathers Beach doesn’t have BBQ facilities or playgrounds. However, Esplanade Park is nearby and offers green space, BBQs, and a playground for those looking to picnic or let the kids play.
- Cafés and restaurants: There are plenty of cafés and restaurants close by if you don’t want to pack food. Options range from casual fish and chips to more upscale dining experiences.

Even though Bathers is one of the more sheltered beaches along the coast, it’s still important to stay safe, especially since it’s not patrolled. Keep these safety tips in mind:
- Swimming: Not patrolled so swim close to shore and avoid going alone. Water is usually calm but gets deep quickly.
- Sun safety: Wear sunscreen and a hat, reapply often, and bring water, there’s not much shade on the sand.
