Smiths Beach Guide (2025): Everything You Need to Know About This South West Beauty!

Smiths Beach is a real WA gem! The sand’s white, the water’s clear, and the waves are perfect for a surf. I’ve been coming to Smiths Beach for years, it’s one of my favourite spots to spend the day because it never disappoints – there’s so much to do and it’s an absolute stunner! 

Smiths Beach is located on Wadandi Boodja and its traditional owners are the Wadandi People. The Wadandi People are known as the Saltwater people – which is a very fitting name for those who live and breathe this windswept and rugged stretch of coastline.

If you’re planning a down south getaway, Smiths Beach needs to be on your itinerary. If you’re into surfing, you’ll love the breaks. Not a surfer? No worries – you can swim or just chill on the beach. And the sunsets? Absolutely stunning! Read on for everything you need to know about Smiths Beach, things to do there, facilities, how to get there, where to stop for a meal and more. 

How to Get to Smiths Beach

Smiths Beach is tucked away on the southwest coast of Western Australia, right near Yallingup. In the past, Google Maps has sent me on a wild goose chase trying to find this beach so follow these directions and you’re golden:

Perth to Smiths Beach

The beach is a 3-hour drive southwest of Perth. Take the Kwinana Freeway and Bussell Highway to Dunsborough. From there, it’s just a 15-minute drive along Caves Road to Yallingup. Turn right onto Canal Rocks Road then right onto Smiths Beach Road, and follow it around to the carpark.

Margaret River to Smiths Beach

It’s about a 35-minute drive north of Margaret River via Caves Road to Yallingup. From there, turn onto Canal Rocks Road then right onto Smiths Beach Road, and you’ll reach the beach in just a few minutes.

Parking at Smiths Beach

There’s a decent sized carpark with two accessible parking spots next to a paved footpath. Just remember parking can fill up fast on school holidays and long weekends, so aim to arrive early. 

15 Best Things To Do at Smiths Beach

Smiths Beach isn’t just a looker – there’s plenty to get stuck into while you’re here. Here’s my pick of the best things to do that’ll make your day at Smiths Beach one to remember.

1. Surf the Waves 

The South West is known for its top notch surfing – people flock to the region each year for the Margaret River Pro. Smiths Beach is one of the most popular surf beaches in the region for its consistent swell and several reef breaks. It’s even just fun to watch the surfers do their thing with a coffee in hand from the beach.

2. Go Beach Fishing

If you’re up for a bit of fishing, Smiths Beach is a great spot to cast a line. The beach is known for herring, whiting, and sometimes even tailor. Early mornings and late arvos are the best times to try your luck. Just grab your rod and find a quiet stretch away from the surfers.

3. Go Swimming

Fancy a swim? Smiths Beach is for you! It’s patrolled on weekends and public holidays between October and April each year. If you’re not too keen on big waves, swim south of the creek where it’s not so rough. Always keep an eye on the conditions though, sometimes the surf can get a bit lively and rips are common.  

4. Catch a Stunning Sunset

Stick around until evening, and you’ll be treated to one of the prettiest sunsets around. As the sun dips below the horizon grab a spot on the sand or find a comfy perch on the lookout – either way, it’s the ideal way to wrap up your day at Smiths Beach.

5. Discover Beach Walks and Coastal Trails

If you’re keen on stretching your legs, Smiths Beach has some fantastic walks that’ll show you the best of our coastline. Here are some top picks:

• Cape to Cape Track (Smiths Beach Section): Part of the famous Cape to Cape Track runs past (and on) Smiths Beach. Walk as much or as little as you like, take in ocean views, scramble over granite rocks and into native bushland.
• Smiths Beach to Canal Rocks Walk: A 3.5 km walk along the Cape to Cape Track to Canal Rocks – enjoy granite outcrops and stunning ocean views.
• Smiths Beach to Yallingup Beach: A 1.8 km walk along the Cape to Cape Track north to Yallingup Beach, with plenty of spots to take in the scenery, like Torpedo Rocks Lookout.
• Injidup Natural Spa Walk: A 4.7 km walk along the Cape to Cape Track leading to Injidup Natural Spa, a natural rock pool perfect for a dip.

6. Enjoy the Lookout Points

Don’t miss out on the lookout points around Smiths Beach. As soon as you arrive you’ll spot the boardwalk that heads to a lookout point, then down to the beach – it’s a great spot for a coffee while you watch the surfers.

There are heaps of other great lookout spots close by too, like Torpedo Rocks Lookout, Sugarloaf Rock and heaps of little hidden lookouts. Sunrise and sunset are magic times to be up there, with the sky putting on a real show. Keep an eye out for whales during migration season; they sometimes cruise by!

7. Relax and Soak Up the Sun 

Sometimes, all you need is a spot on the sand to unwind, and Smiths Beach is perfect for that. With its 600m wide stretch of white sand, there’s plenty of room to lay out your towel, crack open a good book and get some sun.

8. Picnic on the Sand

Smiths Beach is the ideal spot to spread out a blanket and enjoy some good tucker with unbeatable ocean views. Whether you’re nibbling on sandwiches at lunchtime or sharing a cheese platter as the sun sets, it will be super special. 

You can grab some snacks nearby at Lamont’s. Don’t forget to take your rubbish with you – let’s keep this slice of paradise just the way we found it.

9. Salmon Fishing 

If you’re around during salmon season, Smiths Beach is a great spot to try your hand at salmon fishing. Every autumn, schools of salmon make their run along the coast, and people flock here to chuck in a line. Just bring your gear down to the beach, find a good spot, and cast away. Early mornings or late arvos are usually the best times. 

10. Go Snorkelling at the Aquarium

If you’re keen to explore beneath the waves, there’s a great spot nearby at the Yallingup Aquarium. The clear waters of this rock pool here are perfect for checking out the local marine life. The best time to snorkel is on a calm day when the water’s nice and clear. Just grab your snorkel and mask, and you’re all set. Give it a go – you won’t be disappointed!

11. Whale Watching 

If you’re visiting between June and December, you’re in for a treat – it’s whale watching season! Smiths Beach is a prime spot to catch sight of humpback whales and southern right whales as they migrate along the coast. Head up to one of the nearby lookout points for a better view. 12. Check Out Nearby Smiths Point 

Just a short walk from Smiths Beach you’ll find Smiths Point. It’s a fantastic spot for panoramic views of the coastline. Here you can watch the waves crash against the rocks and maybe even spot some dolphins or whales during migration season. 

13. Have Fish and Chips

After a day by the ocean, treat yourself to some classic fish and chips. Nearby Lamont’s cooks up fish and chips to take away. Grab your feed and head back to the beach or find a cosy picnic spot nearby. Enjoying crispy fish and hot chippies while watching the waves is the ultimate way to finish off your day.

Smiths Beach is a photographer’s dream. With stunning sunsets, clear blue waters and bright white sand, there’s no shortage of picture-perfect moments. Whether you’re a pro or just love snapping pics on your phone. Sunrise and sunset are especially magical!

The Southwest is home to some pretty spectacular beaches! While you’re in the area, make the most of the great outdoors and check out these nearby spots:

• Canal Rocks: Just down the road, the ocean squeezes through huge granite rock formations. Check it out from the boardwalk – it’s pretty impressive.
• Injidup Natural Spa: A natural rock pool where the waves create a bubbling effect, like a spa. It’s the best spot for a quick dip and an insta pic!
• Meelup Beach: Known for its calm, clear waters, Meelup is perfect for a swim or a picnic. Great for families and just a short drive away.
• Yallingup Aquarium: This natural rock pool near Yallingup is a bit of a local secret. On a calm day, it’s perfect for a swim or snorkel.

• Parking: There’s a decent-sized car park close to the beach, so finding a spot is usually a breeze. Just keep in mind it can fill up during peak times and holidays.
• Toilets and Showers: You’ll find public toilets near the car park area. There are also outdoor showers where you can rinse off.
• Bins: There are bins available near the beach entrance. Let’s do our bit to keep Smiths Beach pristine.

Smiths Beach tips

To make your visit to Smiths Beach even better, here are some handy tips:

• Are dogs allowed at Smiths Beach? In summer, dogs are permitted on the beach before 9am and after 5pm. They’re allowed all day during the rest of the year.
• Shark Activity During Salmon Season: From March to May, the salmon run brings schools of fish close to shore, which can attract sharks. If you’re swimming or surfing during these months, stay alert and check the SharkSmart  website for warnings
• It Can Get a Little Weedy: Sometimes, especially after a bit of rough weather, seaweed can wash up on the beach. It might make some spots less ideal for swimming.
• Leave No Trace: Let’s all do our part to keep Smiths Beach pristine. Take all your rubbish with you when you leave. 
• Can You Camp at Smiths Beach? Camping isn’t allowed directly at Smiths Beach. If you’re keen to camp, there are campgrounds and caravan parks in nearby areas like Yallingup and Dunsborough. 
• Accessibility: Access to the beach involves some steps and sandy paths, which might be a bit tricky for prams or wheelchairs.

Lamont’s Smiths Beach

Right next to the beach, Lamont’s offers a relaxed dining with a menu featuring fresh, local produce. Whether you’re after breakfast, lunch, or dinner, they’ve got you covered. Their wine list is impressive, showcasing some of the region’s best wines.

Best Time To Visit Smiths Beach

Smiths Beach is a stunner all year round, but the best time to visit can depend on what you’re after:

• Summer (December to February): If you’re keen on swimming and soaking up the sun, summer is spot on. The weather is warm, and the ocean is perfect for a dip. Just be aware it can get pretty busy during school holidays, so expect more people on the beach.
• Autumn (March to May): This is the best time for surfing and fishing. The waves are consistent, and the salmon run happens around this time.
• Winter (June to August): I like to visit on clear days in winter to lay in the sun while avoiding the crowds.
• Spring (September to November): Spring brings wildflower season and the coastal trails around Smiths Beach come alive with colour. The weather warms up, making it perfect for hiking, beach walks, and early swims if you’re brave.

Western Australia Beach Safety

It’s important to keep safety in mind. Here are some tips:

• Swim Between the Flags: When the beach is patrolled, make sure you swim between the flags. 
• Sun Safety: The Aussie sun can be pretty fierce. Remember to slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen, and slap on a hat. Reapply sunscreen regularly, especially after a swim.
• Shark Smart: Stay updated on any shark sightings or beach closures by checking the SharkSmart website or app before you head out. While encounters are rare, it’s good to stay informed.
• Watch for Rips: Smiths Beach can have strong currents and rips at times. If you’re unsure about the conditions, take a moment to observe the water or ask a local. When in doubt, it’s best not to go out.
• Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day, especially on hot days.
